Simmy is sent to live with his father on the West Coast of the South Island. He finds himself in a quiet rural place, devoid of technology. There is no internet and no mobile phone coverage! How will he survive away from his mum, his friends and the city life he is accustomed to?
It takes a while to get used to living in such a remote and isolated place. He is forced to pick up a pen and write letters home to his mum to communicate his frustration and loneliness.
When he realises she is ill and cannot respond, he knows he has to be brave.
It is the kororā, little blue penguins who capture his attention and change the way he sees the world.

A Little Blue was designed for 7-12 year olds who are reluctant readers. The text and illustrations work together to tell a deeper story than the letter form of the narrative. This story has proved to be a favourite of all ages. Adults , children and babies love it.
A Little Blue is the first book in a series created by Jeanette about the threatened species of Aotearoa New Zealand. A Little Blue is endorsed by the West Coast Penguin Trust, with a donation from every sale of every book going toward conservation and protection of kororā, the little blue penguins.
A note from the creator: It was very important to me as the author to also illustrate A Little Blue. The story is set on the West Coast where I live and the illustrations needed to tell a deeper, bigger story than just the words, which are sparse.
