Are My Thoughts Worth Listening To?

Aimed at children aged 5–9, this powerful and practical picture book tackles negative self-talk in a way that is both accessible and immediately useful.

When intrusive thoughts begin to take over, they can feel constant, overwhelming, and difficult to ignore. In this relatable story, a young child shares what it’s like when those thoughts grow louder, affecting sleep, confidence, and everyday life. With gentle guidance, they discover a simple but transformative strategy: turning negative thoughts into a character they can challenge and talk back to.

This clear, memorable approach gives children a tangible way to understand their inner voice and regain a sense of control, building confidence and resilience along the way.

With Becky Overeem’s warm, reassuring storytelling and Sarah Trolle’s expressive, engaging illustrations, this is a standout resource for homes, classrooms, and counselling settings. With growing demand for children’s books that support emotional wellbeing, “Are My Thoughts Worth Listening To?” is a strong addition to any children’s section, with clear appeal for parents, educators, and professionals supporting young people.

Reviews

WhatBookNext.com ~ Are My Thoughts Worth Listening To? is such an important book for young listeners or readers who are dealing with negative feelings and thoughts.

This full colour picture book begins with a young girl who talks directly to the reader about the negative thoughts that are beginning to overwhelm her. She asks the reader if they feel like this too, connecting them to the girl’s plight. She explains how she used to solve the problem, but that it’s just not working anymore.

Images of the character in daily life solidify her even more – with her mum, at school, and at home with the family pet. Deciding to talk to her mum during meal preparation is another familiar connection between story and reader.

The solution is something any young listener or reader can try themselves to combat the negative thoughts following them around. It’s practical, easy and even a little fun.
