At the Beach – Explore and Discover the New Zealand Seashore

Explore the New Zealand seashore as it covers sandy beaches, rock pools and mudflats. Discover the animals and plants that make these different habitats such exciting places to visit, such as crabs, sea stars, kina and sea anemones, shellfish, seaweeds, sponges and sandhoppers, fish, jellyfish and shrimps, and birds.

Ned has drawn pictures of a few of the most common living things you will find on our seashore to help you recognise them and to show you where they live. Even if you don’t go to the beach very often, you can have fun playing I-spy looking for the animals in the illustrations. Gillian has written about what they eat (mostly each other) and how they survive at the beach.

Suitable for preschoolers up and anyone curious about New Zealand’s natural environment.

Description

At the Beach is another title in the award-winning ‘explore & discover’ series by the successful author and illustrator combination of Gillian Candler and Ned Barraud.

Winner of the Elsie Locke Medal for Non-fiction in the 2013 LIANZA Children’s Book Awards. Finalist in the 2013 New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards.

How the book starts

At the edge of the land where the sea begins, there are sandy beaches, mudflats and rocky shores.

It’s low tide. The beach is wide, the mudflats are exposed and the rock pools are nearly empty. As the tide comes in, the salty sea water will creep over the mudflats and fill up the rock pools, and the waves will break high up on the beach.
