Castle Grim

Are there still people out there in the rest of the world? For decades there’s been nothing. No ships, no messages, nothing but floating debris.

Fighting to survive in a future Aotearoa with no internet or global communications, where books can no longer be made and have become invaluable, twelve-year-old Herman’s life is turned upside down when he’s sent off to a fortess-like orphanage – known as Castle Grim.

Surrounded by pirates and stalked by kidnappers prowling the land, Herman is determined to find out what has happened to his parents and enlists the help of his clever friend Polly. Having read every adventure story he could get his hands on, Herman is about to star in his own!

Reviews

WhatBookNext ~ Castle Grim has everything that middle-grade readers love. Action, adventure, friendship, courage, pirates, an orphanage, along with a dystopian setting on a treacherous piece of ocean between New Zealand’s North & South Islands (Cook Strait).
Winner of the Tom Fitzgibbon Award 2025, Castle Grim’s author Shaun Barnett wrote it whilst looking out from his writing desk at the Pencarrow & Haewai Lighthouses, which star in his book. I for one am glad that he stuck with Castle Grim over the 12 years in writing it. It’s a grand adventure with kiwi kids doing extraordinary things in a dystopian New Zealand.

The Sapling ~ This posthumously published tale is a rollicking adventure, which examines so many prescient issues: environmental collapse, human cooperation, how we care for those in need. Appealing to readers of dystopian fiction, but also adventure seekers of all stripes—the writing is propulsive and utterly enjoyable.
