KidsBooksNZ ~ There’s nothing cuter than a toddler in gumboots splashing through puddles—and this delightful picture book celebrates just that joy, while also encouraging families to care for wētā they might find in their backyard.
I love my gumboots.
Mud squishers.
Ice smashers.
Rain sploshers.
Puddle splashers.
Each night, the child leaves their gumboots outside the back door, ready for the next day’s adventure. But one morning, when they go to put them on—there’s something crawly inside! A big, hairy, grumpy wētā! Shocked and squeamish, the child kicks off the boot and watches the wētā scuttle away under some ferns.
But the next day—and the next—and the next—the same wētā is back. The child tries stuffing newspaper in the boots, but the wētā still finds its way in. Other clever tricks don’t work either. What can be done? You’ll have to read this charming, humorous book with its gentle environmental message to find out.
