The Living Tree

A fascinating in-depth look at native and introduced New Zealand trees, which reveals the complex and diverse contained living environments that they provide.

In The Living Tree we see that no tree lives in isolation. A mature tree has its own unique living community of animals, plants and fungi, either living together harmoniously or hunting each other for prey.

This sophisticated, illustrated book is divided into three sections — down around the roots, up and down the trunk, and in and out of the branches. Each is quite distinct in its nature and shows the range of organisms in this compelling book.

Key features:

  • A closer look at a tree as a living eco-system and the life it supports at each level of growth — from the roots to the upper branches.
  • In-depth information about the many fascinating animals and plants that live in, on and around our native trees, including fantail, kererū, giant wētā, huhu beetle, forest gecko, shore skink, bracket fungi, clematis and many more.
  • Includes a fold-out giant tree with visual cross-references to pages in the book featuring the tree’s various residents.

The Living Tree will pique the interest of anyone intrigued by New Zealand’s flora and fauna and with Dave Gunson’s detailed illustrations and informative text this will make a great school resource.
