What Happened That Day was included on the 2008 Storylines Notable Books list and was nominated for the LIANZA book awards in the same year.
The target reader for this book is mainly those who struggle with reading, boys in particular. The reading level, font style, layout and content matter all reflect this. However, this book also appeals to other readers, younger and older, and not just those who find reading a challenge.
Author’s note: “This story was originally picked up for publication by Reed NZ. However, right at the time it was published, Pearson International bought out the Reed catalogue. Reed would have promoted the book directly into schools but Pearson/Penguin/Puffin does not. It would be wonderful to see more schools aware of this book as an option for young readers. A number of teachers have already introduced it to their students where it has been well received. ”
