You Don’t Know How Lucky You Are! Me i Mōhio Koe ki tō Waimarietanga!

When Izzy moans about unloading the dishwasher, Great-uncle Arthur says, ‘You don’t know how lucky you are!”

He’s always done something worse — like hand-washing stacks of dishes, or dodging arrows in a battle.

As the stories get wilder — taking three days to finish a meal of tough old food, for example — his great-niece starts to wonder if Arthur may be exaggerating a little …

Author Belinda O’Keefe joins forces with well-known illustrator Ross Kinnaird in this fun book that helps young readers connect with the experience of their grandparents’ generation. Translator: Te Ama-Rere-Tai Rangihuna.

Reviews

KidsBooksNZ ~ This book, produced with both English and te reo Māori on each page, is a new one for author Belinda O’Keefe.  Anyone who has heard older relatives say things like, “Well in my day, we had to walk thirty miles in the snow. Barefeet. Up a mountain. In a blizzard. Wearing shorts,” will immediately relate to this story. The main character is a child whose Great-uncle Arthur constantly regales her with, “You don’t know how lucky you are,” stories. Ross Kinnaird’s fun, bright, busy illustrations give young readers lots to look at. I like the chicken that appears on the pages, shadowing the girl, sometimes mirroring her expressions and experiences. There is plenty of humour added to the text by the colourful illustrations.
